Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie got into a debate on Today with Jenna & Friends after Bush Hager dramatically claimed they were a “generation” apart due to their 10-year age difference.

“I’m younger than you. Like, a generation younger,” Bush Hager, 43, claimed during her morning chat with Guthrie, 53.

Guthrie disagreed, to say the least.

“Not a full generation,” she said. “I wish we had a live poll right now. Do we consider 10 years – we have a 10 year distance – [a generation]?”

While Guthrie admitted their age gap is “not small,” she denied that it means they’re a “generation” apart.

“It is not a generation. I’m a generation removed from your parents,” she told Bush Hager.

Bush Hager then did not believe Guthrie when she claimed she’s part of Gen X. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Gen X comprises adults born between 1965 and 1980. Bush Hager just barely missed the cutoff as she was born in 1981.

“You are not Gen X,” Bush Hager said in disbelief.

“Of course I’m Gen X,” Guthrie fired back. “Look up Gen X in the dictionary. It’s got my picture, and my clunky heels and my coffee house, smoking cigarettes.”

There is certainly a generational divide. Bush Hager noted that Guthrie may be Gen X, but she’s a Millennial.

“I know but a generation is like 25 to 30 years, okay? Not 10 years,” Guthrie clarified.

It’s always fun to see Guthrie and Bush Hager together on Jenna & Friends. Guthrie has become a recurring guest host on the fourth hour of Today, which means viewers have been able to bask in their hilarious friendship.

Earlier this week, Guthrie teased Bush Hager on the show by asking if she ever had boys visit the “Governor’s mansion” her house when her father, former U.S. President George W. Bush, was the governor of Texas.

“No,” Bush Hager deadpanned, until she slyly added, “Although, a couple of boys dropped by there too.”

“I bet they did!” Guthrie fired back.

Today with Jenna & Friends airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
