Since having parenting expert Jonathan Haidt on Today, Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager have been candid on the show about how they’re giving their kids more independence.

Understandably, the co-hosts took very different approaches to it.

Kotb shared hers during Tuesday’s broadcast, when she recalled a story Bush Hager once told her: “You know how we say we wanna have our kids have some independence, and you told me your kids went to the bathroom at LaGuardia [Airport] together?”

The memory made both co-hosts laugh as Bush Hager added, “[My husband] Henry was like, ‘Do you think we should let them go?’ And I was like, ‘Nobody is gonna kidnap all three.'”

Kotb, on the other hand, explained that she let her seven-year-old daughter go to the drug store alone. As a disclaimer, she told the audience, “Again, it’s a small town, not like randomly wandering around New York City.”

“She bought all the stuff and she came back, I’m standing in the driveway, that kid jumped in my arms like nobody’s business and screamed, ‘I did it!’ She did something for the first time,” Kotb told Bush Hager. “It reminded me of your kids going to summer camp for the first time.”

Bush Hager recalled Haidt’s advice for how to teach your kids to be independent without giving them a smart phone. “We would roam over the whole neighborhood and at some point we have stopped letting our kids feel that independence,” she said.

Kotb added, “I understand the world can feel scarier and, in some cases, it is, because we all live in places where we’ve seen things happen. But I think one thing that someone said to me about my kids is they said, don’t put your worry on them, and don’t put all your fears on them.”

After she got over the initial embarrassment of having Kotb bring up that story again, Bush Hager said she was “proud” of Kotb’s daughter for her accomplishment.

Today with Hoda & Jenna airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
