Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager had the puberty talk on Thursday’s (Sept .14) episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna, and it took a hilarious turn.
As the two got into a discussion about puberty and the birds and the bees, Bush Hager recalled the first time she and her husband, Henry Hager, went through a rite of passage plenty of couples eventually experience: asking your partner to buy you tampons.
“When Henry and I first got together and he had to buy me tampons for the first time, I might as well have asked him to buy me illegal drugs,” she recalled. “He’s like, ‘I got the goods, I got them!’
“And now, after 15 years, he’s like, ‘What do you need? A tampon? Ma’am, [I need] tampons!'” she said, mimicking him on the phone. “He doesn’t care.”
The conversation began after Kotb explained that a kind stranger had once misunderstood her when she asked for a pen, and instead handed her a tampon wrapped in a napkin “like it was contraband.”
Kotb then asked if Bush Hager explained what puberty is to her oldest daughter, 10-year-old Mila.
“Yeah, well she read Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, thank you to Judy Blume,” Bush Hager replied. “She was interested and I explained it to her.”
She then recalled her daughters’ biggest takeaways from the puberty talk, which even made their stage crew laugh behind the camera.
“Evidently, the other day in the car, Henry was taking them to school, and Poppy goes, ‘I hope I get Mom’s boobs,'” Bush Hager recalled, laughing. “And Mila was like, ‘I don’t, I would rather not.’ Poppy’s like, ‘When I go through puberty I hope I get mom’s boobs.'”
Kotb started cracking up as Bush Hager explained, “Well that’s what happens when you go through puberty – you develop breasts.”
Kotb replied sarcastically, “Thanks for the tutorial,” then explained that the reason she asked was because she realized she learned about these topics in school, not from her parents. “No parents were sitting down and having a conversation,” she said.
Bush Hager agreed. “No one was ever like, ‘Let’s sit down and discuss,'” she said.
Though the former POTUS and First Lady might not have had the “birds and the bees” chat with Bush Hager growing up, she mentioned that she and her husband planned to have the “birds and the bees” talk with their kids “one day.”
Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
