If you’re the parent of a school-age child these days, you’ve probably noticed that math is taught differently now compared to the way it was taught twenty or thirty years ago. (So many blocks of ten!) On today’s (December 18) episode of The Today Show, host Jenna Bush Hager revealed that she is utterly confused and at a loss when it comes to helping her fifth-grade daughter Mila with her math homework.
After watching a Tik Tok video of Serena Williams helping her own daughter, Olympia, with her homework, Bush Hager told co-host Hoda Kotb about her own homework struggles with her oldest daughter.
“Just wait. Mila’s math homework is what I did in calculus,” she said. “When I failed it the first time! I still have dreams that I’m walking through my high school, going to the class that I can’t find, because I failed it.”
When it comes to the kind of problems ten-year-old Mila works on, Bush Hager says that she occasionally has to have her husband Henry take over for her, saying, “Mila is like, so you don’t get this? This is above your math level?…I either have to sneak out or have Henry do it!”
It’s not entirely Bush Hager’s fault though, as she explains, it’s because the process of learning math has completely changed in the time since she was in school. “They don’t do it the way we learned it! Remember when you carried the one? They don’t carry no ones anymore,” she then laughed. “I don’t know why somebody thought, let’s mess with all the parents in the world and change the way we teach math.”
“Oh my God, they don’t carry the one?” Kotb asked through tears of laughter.
“They don’t carry no ones. They don’t even carry twos! They don’t carry anything. And long division? I don’t know what it is, but they don’t do long division anymore, so, good luck,” she told Kotb as they cut away to commercial.
This is the kind of relatable content we watch this show for!
Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
