Hoda Kotb had a confession to make during Friday’s (Oct. 4) episode of Today: Her second grader’s math homework is only “getting harder” for her.

She admitted as much during her morning chat with Jenna Bush Hager, who has previously complained on the show about how much she struggles to help her kids with their math homework.

“I told you! You didn’t believe me about carrying the one’s,” she told Kotb.

Kotb explained that she realized as much when she was recently helping her daughter. “I know, I thought second grade was gonna be breezy math. I looked at her math homework and how the numbers were all crazy… I thought I was asking her a complex thing… and she said really quickly, ’20.’ And I said, ‘Great, how did you know that?'”

She said that her daughter gave her a rather confusing explanation as to how she got the correct answer, prompting Bush Hager to gloat, “I told you! You didn’t believe me.”

The Today co-hosts then bonded over how they used to struggle to do timed math challenges when they were school. “That was my worst [nightmare] like heart-pounding. I still remember third grade, like freaking out,” Kotb said.

Bush Hager agreed and admitted she “could never finish” it in time. But she maintains kids “don’t memorize anymore” in school.

This isn’t the first time they’ve ranted about the new ways kids are learning math these days. Bush Hager once admitted to Kotb that her daughter’s homework felt like she was doing calculus again – which she failed.

“I still have dreams that I’m walking through my high school, going to the class that I can’t find, because I failed it,” she told Kotb with a laugh.

She insisted that the school no longer “do it the way we learned it.” She also admitted that she sometimes has to get her husband to help with the kids’ homework instead.

“Remember when you carried the one? They don’t carry no ones anymore,” Bush Hager said with a laugh. “I don’t know why somebody thought, ‘Let’s mess with all the parents in the world and change the way we teach math.’”

Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
