Hoda Kotb could not hold herself back when Jenna Bush Hager completely butchered Truman Capote’s name on Today With Hoda & Jenna.
While introducing the trailer for FX’s new series Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, Bush Hager mispronounced Capote’s name as “Capo-tay.” Kotb caught it almost immediately and swiftly corrected her.
“Well, that’s how I say it, how do you say it?” Bush Hager fired back.
“I say Capo-tee,” Kotb replied.
The Today co-hosts continued to go back and forth for a bit as Kotb and the stage crew laughed at Bush Hager’s mistake.
“Capo-tay, I say it that way,” Bush Hager replied.
“Okay, Capote, I got it,” Kotb said. “You know when you say something so many times that you’re unclear what it is?”
“I’m unclear! Because I also love him,” Bush Hager said. When Kotb continued to tease her, she fired back, “I’m gonna take your Capo-tay and Capote it.”
The co-hosts then watched the trailer for Feud, which features a star-studded cast including Diane Lane, Molly Ringwald, Chloe Sevigny, and more.
The co-hosts then duked it out over how to pronounce Sevigny’s last name. “Is that right?” Bush Hager asked their stage crew. “Well, is that right or not?! That’s not right.”
She challenged Kotb to try and pronounce her last name, but she just jokingly answered, “Capote.”
At that point, poor Bush Hager seemed like she was over the merciless teasing. “Capote, Capotti, whatever!” she said.
Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
