Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb got into a heated debate about several Thanksgiving-related topics during a recent episode of Today, where they were asked to defend who was “the lesser of two evils” between the “drunk uncle” or the “dramatic aunt” at Thanksgiving dinner.
Bush Hager was up first to defend her staunch, anti-“drunk uncle” position to Kotb in under 20 seconds.
“Y’all, do any of y’all have a drunk uncle? Because if you do, you leave him at home in Nebraska where he belongs,” Bush Hager said, adding, “He can be inappropriate, he can say some nasty things.”
As Kotb laughed, Bush Hager shared a rather shocking story about an encounter her twin sister, Barbara Bush Pierce, once had with someone’s “drunk uncle.”
“One of our friends, who will remain nameless, has a drunk uncle,” Bush Hager added as she began running out of time on the 20-second clock. It appears that she was talking about a friend she and Kotb share. “He once touched my sister on the backside! She did not like it! The end!” Once she ran out of time, the Today host did not share any additional details about the story as they continued on with the debate.
In fact, the shocking story was largely glossed over during the broadcast. Kotb’s eyes went wide as Bush Hager recounted the tale, but she did not say anything in response or correct her co-host as they moved on with the segment.
Bush Hager and her twin sister share quite the bond. The Today host recently found herself in the hot seat when she was asked to choose to save either her twin or her husband from a burning building.
Though she seemed uncomfortable with the question, Bush Hager responded, “I love my husband, but we’ll have to see.”
But she shared that her husband made sure to ask Barbara for permission to marry her before he proposed.
“He knew our bond was so important that if he didn’t go to her first, he would be in trouble,” she said.
Bush Hager has shared several stories about growing up with her sister, including that they once had a crush on the same boy in the seventh grade, which led to an awkward squabble on the air.
The Today host was quick to set the record straight with her sister after Barbara claimed their crush liked her first. “I don’t think he liked you first,” she outrightly told her sister during a November 2023 broadcast of Today With Hoda & Jenna.
Today with Hoda & Jenna airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
