Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb love a good challenge. The Today co-hosts faced off against one another in a silly writing bit after they discussed why cursive handwriting was making a comeback. But only one host came out on top, according to the Today stage crew.
“There’s a story we love. Cursive handwriting, which many people said was lost forever, is making a comeback,” Kotb said. She added that schools stopped teaching it because “kids don’t use it.”
But the Today hosts wanted to see how they would fare in a cursive writing challenge. They were asked to write X, Y, and Z in cursive on a whiteboard.
Kotb finished first, earning applause for her penmanship from the stage crew behind the camera.
But when Bush Hager then showed her whiteboard to the camera, multiple people behind the scenes could be heard saying “No,” as if they were booing her.
Bush Hager’s jaw dropped at the response. “That is so shamey and rude! I wanted it to look like cursive,” she said.
As she erased the whiteboard she added, “I want to go back to a place where people are carefree. Is there a place I can go where people are carefree and not judgey?” As Today fans know, she was referring to the new Christmas single she and Kotb recorded, titled “A Carefree Christmas With Hoda & Jenna.”
This isn’t the first time Bush Hager has been shut down by her stage crew — on a recent episode of Today, Bush Hager asked if it was “normal” that her four-year-old son, Hal, still sleeps in a crib.
“Ya’ll, it’s normal, right?” she asked, to which the crew behind the camera chose to respond with a resounding “NO.”
“I wasn’t even asking you!” Bush Hager replied with a laugh. “I was asking them.”
Kotb backed her up, adding, “[She was] asking the people at home.”
Despite the feedback, Bush Hager maintained that she was going to let him keep sleeping in his crib, “where he feels safe.”
Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
