Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager regularly offer advice to viewers who write into Today with their own social dilemmas, but they don’t always end up on the viewer’s side.
The Today co-hosts found themselves on opposite sides when a viewer wrote into the show about a situation they had with their friends.
“I invited a few girls to a weekend getaway at my beach house. Our place is small so I couldn’t invite everyone in our group. The girls I invited kept FaceTiming some of the others back home. Am I wrong to think it was rude?” the viewer asked.
Kotb was quick to say it’s a “red flag” that the fan only invited some of the people in her friend group, but she agreed that it was rude for the guests to call their friends who were left out of the vacation. “It was rude, it was rude,” she replied, before adding, “I hate to say this, but if you have a good group of friends and you only invite half of them to the beach house, it means you’re picking your favorites.”
Bush Hager appeared shocked by Kotb’s response.
“So, now you’re blaming the person that threw the party?” Bush Hager asked. “She was just writing in to see if it was rude to FaceTime and now you’re just, you took her little paper-cut and you’re pouring some acid into it. Jeez, Hoda!”
Kotb laughed, but she offered a scenario to Bush Hager so she could understand where she was coming from. She asked Bush Hager to imagine, “I’m at a party and I’ve got Savannah [Guthrie], Sheinelle [Jones] and Dylan [Drier],” and they gave Bush Hager a call despite leaving her out of their plans. “You’re like, what? What happened? Where is everyone?”
Bush Hager was quick to shut that possibility down.
“That would never happen. Stop speaking in hypotheticals. You would never go to a party without me,” she stated, causing Kotb to laugh.
“Well, if it did, you would be mad,” Kotb replied.
Bush Hager has had her own moments on the show where she didn’t side with a viewer asking them for advice. In fact, she once cut the entire “Girl Code” segment short when she declared she was “at capacity” and not in a place to offer advice during an episode earlier this year.
“We’re too tired. I don’t know, I really don’t,” she said as Kotb laughed. “I can’t answer anybody’s Girl Code, I’m at my max.”
“I’m too tired. It’s a Monday,” she said at one point, before later telling Kotb, “I think I’m done with Girl Code for a little bit.”
