The ladies on Today With Hoda & Jenna love to discuss the latest dating developments, but one trend in particular seemed to be a real disappointment for the co-hosts.
Friday’s (Oct. 20) episode of Today kicked off with a discussion of what Bustle called “the lowercase boys” in a recently published article. As Hoda Kotb explained, “It’s the boys that, when they text you, they don’t even bother hitting the capital button.”
Jenna Bush Hager, on the other hand, complained that most of dating now takes place on the internet or on our phones. “I can’t believe all of our relationship things are now on the phone,” she said.
The Today co-hosts then read an excerpt from the article that showed examples of texts written entirely in lowercase to express their disinterest, which Kotb remarked made them seem like “the guys who don’t care that much.”
“By the way, that’s attractive at the beginning,” Bush Hager advised. She then joked that it’s only a matter of time until it makes you demand at least “one exclamation mark,” saying, “Can you care, please?”
The Today co-hosts had some parting advice to share for “the lowercase boys” everywhere: “Call someone. Then you’re not the lowercase boy anymore,” Bush Hager advised.
But Bush Hager is not immune to someone playing hard to get, and recently admitted that the technique was employed by her now-husband when they first began dating.
“Somebody gave Henry really good advice,” she said during a recent episode of Today. “Honestly, I know the reason why we’re married. There’s many [reasons], I don’t want to downplay all of his great qualities, but one of them was he knew how to play hard to get.”
She recalled, “Well, he would not call everyday, yet I knew he was into me. I was like, this man knows how to play it real well.”
Playing hard to get obviously worked in their favor. The couple have been married since 2008 and share three children.
She also joked that she knew he was still into her because he would randomly send her texts saying, “‘Miss you,’ ‘Thinking of you.'”
“‘Miss you’ used to be like the old ‘U up?’” Bush Hager joked.
