NextImg:Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb Hilariously Fail Gen Z Slang Quiz on ‘Today’: “Never Heard It”

There’s no question that the youths often come up with their own slang and catchphrases that sound weird to older generations. One generation’s “right on” is another’s “totes” and still another’s “bet.” On this morning’s episode of Today with Hoda and Jenna, co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager decided to test their knowledge of Gen Z slang to see how hip they really are, and the results were… mixed.

The idea came to them after reading a headline about the top 10 annoying Gen Z slang terms.

“We’re gonna take a quiz to see if we know the lingo, okay?” Kotb said.

The first word to come up was “sus.” Bush Hager remarked, “Oof, I know this one from my child. Sus means like, suspect.”

When the answer popped up on the teleprompter, Bush Hager and Kotb said in unison, “Short for ‘suspicious,'” to which Bush Hager defended her initial answer, saying, “They’re synonyms, y’all!”

“Next: FR,” Kotb challenged Bush Hager.

“Wait, what? Frrr? F.R.? Like, you say it F.R.? Never heard it,” Bush Hager said. Is she FR with this?

“Freezing?” Kotb guessed.

Then Kotb announced, “The answer is ‘for real,'” while Bush Hager interjected, “Sometimes I like saying IRL, like IRL. ‘Kids just be on IRL!'” making me think she might not actually know what IRL means.

The next term thrown out was “bet.”

“Like a bet? Like, when I bet you, I double dog dared you?'” Bush Hager asked. Kotb helpfully informed her, “It’s a way of saying ‘yes’ or ‘I agree.'”

“Last one: ‘period,'” Kotb said.

“Done?” Bush Hager guessed.

“I don’t think that’s so Gen [Z] – I think we’ve heard that before,” Kotb said, while Bush Hager chimed in, “Period? You guys, we’ve been saying that since Clueless! Since the dawn of days!” Period.

Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
