Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager got a lesson in table etiquette on Friday’s (Sep. 8) episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna when the pair took a trip to Tiffany’s Blue Box Café.

Joined by etiquette trainer Mariah Grumet, the co-hosts were taught the do’s and don’ts of tea time. But Grumet soon realized she may have her work cut out for her.

The segment began with Bush Hager asking Grumet a number of hilarious rapid-fire questions about table etiquette, such as, “What is the etiquette of dipping your napkin in your water and scrubbing your children’s faces?” And, “When your kids order fries, … are you supposed to sit there and let them go to waste?”

Bush Hager in particular had some trouble with remembering the etiquette tips Grumet gave them. Grumet, who called herself “the etiquette police,” taught them a number of rules, including that you must stir your tea back and forth rather than in a circular motion, and that you should always plate your food before eating it.

“This was a rule I kept forgetting,” Bush Hager admitted in a voiceover. In fact, she missed that rule at least three times during the segment.

Later, as she noticed the co-hosts were trying their best to adhere to her etiquette tips, Grumet said, “We’re not dining with the royals, so it’s okay.”

“We’re feeling like we are,” Bush Hager admitted.

At the end of the segment, Grumet told Kotb and Bush Hager that being a good friend and applying “practicality” will “always trump the rules.” She said, “You want to set yourself up for success. You don’t want to be so delicate that you’re afraid of spilling things on yourself or something like that.”

“Nobody has ever called us delicate,” Bush Hager joked. “But thank you.”

Hopefully, having tea with Grumet taught the co-hosts a thing or two.

Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10 a.m. ET on NBC.
