Jenna Bush Hager got candid about her past dating life when Regina Hall stopped by to guest host Today With Jenna & Friends.
The ladies were discussing Hall’s interesting – but not quite “unrequited” – crush on the Dalai Lama when Hall pointed out that Bush Hager hasn’t dated in “a long time.”
“Did you have fun when you dated your husband?” she asked Bush Hager.
The Today host, who met her husband when she was 25 years old, admitted, “I had fun when I dated my husband, I wish I dated more people.”
A Today crew member then laughed at her confession, which appeared to shock Bush Hager. “I meant before! Anthony just laughed at me. This came across wrong,” she said, before clarifying: “When I met my husband, that was it. I wish in college – I knew, I loved him. I mean he walked in and I said to Barbara, ‘Of course the cute one has a girlfriend.'”
She continued, “But I just mean in college I felt a little restricted by Secret Service men if I’m really honest. So, I kept my numbers low.”
Bush Hager’s father, George W. Bush, became President of the United States when she was 19 years old and attending the University of Texas at Austin. The Today host has said before that the Secret Service were a daily part of her life growing up; there was even a Secret Service man present when her husband proposed to her.
Hall told Bush Hager that it was “good” that she didn’t date much in college. “You know what, I don’t count mine. I think if you weren’t in your right mind in retrospect they don’t count,” she said. “So your numbers would have stayed low no matter what because they wouldn’t have counted, and you got the right one early.”
Bush Hager maintained that she wishes she “had a little more fun.”
“I felt too restricted, but you know what? Oh well,” she said. She then told Hall that she and her husband will make their 17 year anniversary this coming May, which surprisingly earned no applause from the Today crew. “Nobody clapped, but that’s good,” Bush Hager pointed out.
Shaking her head, Hall led an applause for her Today co-host.
“All the haters out there are single,” she said while pointing to the crew as they joined in on her applause. “Let’s clap! We’re clapping, I’m clapping for Jenna.”
