Lifetime recently announced that it’s heading in a newer, steamier direction with its upcoming holiday release A Cowboy Christmas Romance, and the Today hosts had some mixed reactions to the news.

During Friday’s (Dec. 8) episode, Hoda Kotb explained that the movie is expected to be a “grownup romance” that will add “some smolder to the usual holiday sugar and spice.” She asked her co-host Jenna Bush Hager, “What do you think about a real steamy love scene like that?”

Bush Hager replied, “You know me, I get kind of embarrassed. It depends who you’re watching it with. You don’t want to get around with your mom and dad and watch that.”

She then asked Kotb if she’s ever had a moment like that with her parents. When she denied it, Bush Hager said, “It’s really awful, really just awkward. Everybody’s uncomfortable. Actually, probably the parents aren’t.”

She added, “Even now, when we watch Elf and they kiss, Mila’s like, ‘Ew!'”

Kotb replied, “Kids hate any kind of content like that. They do, they don’t like it.”

But Bush Hager was not surprised by Lifetime’s decision to try putting out some steamier content. Just look at what people are reading these days, she said.

“Well, if you look at what people are reading these days… It used to be that people would hide their Fifty Shades – I’m speaking for a friend – but would hide it in an Economist, [and] pretend they’re reading the news,” she said.

Bush Hager continued, “Now, everyone’s just reading Colleen Hoover left and right! Nobody’s embarrassed anymore! Let’s get into it.”

We all know Bush Hager gets “embarrassed” by topics like these. She recently told Kotb she was getting “uncomfortable” when her co-host began candidly ranting about public displays of affection.

Kotb was also recently crowned the show’s official “sex guru” because she’s been taking on “all the make-out material head on.”
