Days of Our Lives is getting an unusual casting shakeup. Jen Lilley, who has played Theresa Donovan on and off since 2013, will be replaced on the show with Emily O’Brien, who currently plays Gwen von Leuschner, according to the end credits on Monday’s (Oct. 2) episode.
Lilley reprised her role in August when her character attended Victor’s (John Aniston) memorial service and was last seen in Salem on Sept. 22 for a short story arc. Now that Theresa has been recast with a brunette O’Brien — who will continue to play both roles simultaneously — Lilley revealed that producers plan to “put her in a wig” to match her blonde locks.
“That poor girl has had to have conversations with me,” Lilley told Soaps.com, referring to O’Brien knowing about her new role before she did. “How horrible she must have felt!”
When the actress — who was originally kept in the dark — found out about her replacement, she hugged O’Brien and said, “That must be so awkward for you.”
Lilley, however, is no stranger to the common cast switch-ups in soap operas. After all, she temporarily took over as Maxie Jones for Kirsten Storms on General Hospital from 2011 to 2012 — but, according to her, it wasn’t received well by viewers.

“It was horrible with the fans,” she said, expressing empathy for O’Brien, who will only get to finish out the three-month arc planned for Theresa. “You could not do something more unkind to a recast.”
Overall, the entire situation seems messy — especially for Lilley, who reportedly learned she would be handing over the role to her co-star while on set.
“Top to bottom, it was just not handled the right way,” she said, per Deadline. “Everybody was mad, because everybody was kind of lied to.”
This isn’t the only casting change soap opera fans have seen lately. Hayley Erin, who originated the role of Abby Newman on The Young and the Restless, returned to the show after more than a decade as a completely new character.
“I love the rules, or lack of rules, in the soap opera universe,” Erin told Soap Opera Digest. “I had never expected to come back, and I didn’t think it would happen, but I had hoped! I always thought, ‘Maybe they’d let me.’ And I’m really happy that the soap opera universe is so fluid and these kinds of things can happen.”
Days of Our Lives airs on weekdays on Peacock.
