ARLINGTON, Texas – The Giants have asked the Red Sox’s permission to speak to player information coach Jason Varitek about their managerial opening, The Post has learned.
It was not publicly known if Varitek has interest in the position or if the Giants already have interviewed the former long-time catcher.
The Giants opened the managerial position by firing Gabe Kapler with three games remaining in the season and San Francisco in a late-season freefall that ended their chances to reach the playoffs.
Kapler was completing his fourth year as the Giants manager.
Kapler’s interim replacement, Kai Correa, already has interviewed for the position, according to reports, as have two other Giants coaches: Mark Hallberg and Alyssa Nakken.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that another former major league catcher, Mariners coach Stephen Vogt, also is expected to interview for the position.
Varitek has never managed, but was known as a leader in his 15 years with the Red Sox, which included him being named captain after Boston won its first World Series in 86 years in 2004.
The Red Sox won two World Series with him as the starting catcher.
Varitek, 51, has worked with the Red Sox since his retirement after the 2011 season.
He became a uniformed coach in 2021.
