Jason Kelce has broken his silence on the incident in which he smashed a heckler’s cell phone at Penn State.
On ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” before the Chiefs faced the Buccaneers, Kelce expressed regret for his actions — but stopped short of an outright apology.
“I think everybody’s seen on social media the thing that took place this week. Listen, I’m not happy with anything that took place. I’m not proud of it. In a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate, and I just don’t think that that’s a productive thing. I really don’t. I don’t think it leads to discourse, and it’s the right way to go about things, and in that moment I fell down to a level that I shouldn’t have,” Kelce said.
“I think, the bottom line is, I try to live my life by the Golden Rule. It’s what I’ve always been taught. I try to treat people with common decency and respect, and I’m going to keep doing that moving forward even though I fell short this week.”
As Penn State was hosting Ohio State in a massive Big Ten matchup on Saturday, Kelce — who has appeared on ESPN’s College GameDay — was walking around campus, hauling a 12-pack of Garage Beer, which he and his brother Travis own an equity in.
A video went viral in which there was a young man walking behind the former Eagles offensive lineman and heckling him.
“Kelce how does it feel that your brother is a f—–t for dating Taylor Swift?” the man asked.
Kelce immediately turned around and confronted the man, ultimately responding to the insult and grabbing the man’s phone and smashing it on the ground.
“Who’s the f—-t now?” Kelce asked him.
In addition to appearing on “Monday Night Countdown”, Kelce co-hosts the “New Heights” podcast with his brother Travis.
Kelce played all 13 of his NFL seasons with the Eagles, earning six first-team All-Pro nods and winning a Super Bowl championship.
