Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Jamie Foxx‘s new stand-up special What Had Happened Was, which looks like it is shaping up to be a triumphant return to the stage for the comedian.
The Netflix special marks the first time the actor will be addressing the circumstances surrounding his mysterious hospitalization in 2023.
The trailer for What Had Happened Was, which you can watch above, begins with a supercut of headlines and conspiracy theories that spread surrounding his medical crisis. While some headlines speculated that Foxx “is not himself” or that he’d been replaced by a clone, the tone of the trailer is clear: Foxx is here to set the record straight once and for all.
The trailer becomes jubilant, however, once you get a glimpse at the Atlanta audience who came out to watch Foxx perform over a weekend in September of this year. And, though he took some time from the limelight to recover in 2023, Foxx seems happy to be on stage, even though he later said opening up about his health issues for the special was “excruciating.”
“I’m back,” Foxx says in the trailer. “I’m so glad to see y’all here, I’m so glad to be here.”
But the trailer leaves you wanting more as it ends just as Foxx begins explaining, “What had happened was…”
Per the special’s official synopsis, “Amidst laughter and applause, Jamie expresses deep gratitude to those who prayed and supported his recovery, turning this performance into a touching thank you to his fans. This comedy event is a celebration of resilience, humor, and the power of community, reminding us all of the healing power of laughter.”
Foxx opened up to Gayle King about what it was like opening up about his personal life for the special. “It was an excruciating time,” he admitted, “to be able to open those wounds every single day for three nights. It was excruciating because the worry is what gets you.”
The Oscar and Grammy-winning star noted that this was a once-in-a-lifetime “personal journey,” and said that he’s “never going to go through this again.”
“My next jokes will start out, ‘Knock, knock.’ I’ll do an hour and a half of ‘knock, knock’ jokes,” he quipped.
Foxx’s medical crisis certainly impacted his career, but the actor still had several projects premiere leading up to this revelatory special, including his sci-fi comedy They Cloned Tyrone and the thriller Back in Action, which premieres on Netflix early next year.
What Had Happened Was premieres on Netflix Dec. 10.
