James Corden may have exited late night television in 2023 of his own volition, but the U.K. doesn’t seem to be buying it.

During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Corden told Jimmy Kimmel that people across the pond do not appear to believe that he willingly retired from late night television when he exited The Late Late Show last year.

“People are very nice. But no one believes that I wasn’t fired,” Corden said. “People will honestly be like, ‘You don’t have to give me that bullshit. It’s fine, mate. If you got fired, you got fired.’ Because nobody thinks you would ever leave what is — let’s be honest — a cushy existence.”

Kimmel had some suggestions for how Corden could possibly convince people in the U.K. that he wasn’t fired.

“Can’t you get a letter from CBS saying that you were not fired, that you left of your own free will?” Kimmel asked him.

“I would, except they don’t know what CBS is,” Corden joked.

Corden left The Late Late Show in April 2023 with plans to return to London with his family. CBS instead rebooted the game show @midnight to fill Corden’s slot.

During the final episode of his show, Corden reflected on eight years of hosting late night television in America.

“Moving here to America eight years ago, it was a huge leap for me and my family,” Corden said, per The Daily Beast. “We started this show with Obama, then Trump, then a global pandemic, and I’ve watched America change a lot… All I really want to say tonight is to remember what America signifies to the rest of the world.”

Ahead of his exit, Corden confessed that he cannot imagine himself returning to late night television, saying he always knew “this was an adventure and not a final destination.”

“I can’t envisage a scenario where I would return as a late-night host,” he said. “I’d be very, very surprised if [I] did. I’d be gobsmacked.”

He added, “There’s just so many other things that I’d like to try and see what I might be capable of.”
