NextImg:Jalen Ramsey signs record $72.3 million extension with Dolphins

Jalen Ramsey is sticking around South Florida for a while.

The superstar cornerback signed a three-year, $72.3 million contract extension with the Dolphins on Friday, according to NFL Network.

The deal, which will pay him $24.1 million per year, makes Ramsey the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, just ahead of the Broncos’ Patrick Surtain II, who signed a four-year extension worth $24 million per year earlier this week.

Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey smiles as he speaks during a news conference at the NFL football team’s training facility, Tuesday, July 25, 2023, in Miami Gardens, Fla. AP

“Ever since I’ve gotten here, I feel like it’s been a great relationship, it’s been a growing relationship,” Ramsey said, per the Associated Press. “They’ve learned a lot about me, who I am not only as the player but the person. And same, I’ve learned a lot about them and how real they are.”

Ramsey, 29, has proven to be one of the best lockdown corners in the league since going fifth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft to the Jaguars, and he has made the Pro Bowl seven times in eight seasons.

Miami acquired Ramsey from the Rams in March 2023 in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and tight end Hunter Long.

Ramsey was limited by injuries to just 10 games last season but was his usual dominant self defending the pass when he was on the field, intercepting three passes and breaking up five more.

The agreement adds to what has been a busy offseason for the Dolphins.

Miami made Tua Tagovailoa the highest-paid Dolphin ever with a four-year extension worth $212.4 million — $167 million of which is guaranteed — in July.

Earlier this summer, the Dolphins signed wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to a three-year, $84.75 million extension and restructured the contract of Tyreek Hill, giving him $90 million over the next three seasons with $65 million guaranteed.

In late August, the team agreed to a three-year extension with head coach Mike McDaniel, keeping him in Miami through 2028.
