Jaleel White experienced some growing pains while starring as Steve Urkel on Family Matters.

In his new memoir Growing Up Urkel, White remembered network execs requesting that he change up his trademark attire, which fans of the beloved sitcom would recognize as tight jeans and suspenders. Per The U.S. Sun, White noted that this change arrived following Season 8 of Family Matters, when White was already more than 20 years old and felt as though he was aging out of the role.

White claims network execs said, “Let’s get rid of the suspenders. Lower his pants, too. Oh and…It’s getting a bit uncomfortable watching him in tight jeans. There’s a, uh…bulge.”

White revealed that he was “peeling” his pants off “like a banana” when he reached college age, his wardrobe wasn’t the only issue. White said it was “physically painful” to perform Urkel’s high-pitched register due to his changing voice, and that he almost left Family Matters before it concluded.

Yet, he appeared in all nine seasons of the show, despite being initially cast in a Season 1 guest spot. Family Matters also starred Reginald VelJohnson, Darius McCrary, Kellie Shanygne Williams and JoMarie Payton.

White told Us Weekly that “it was incredibly therapeutic” to write about his experiences in his new book.

“What started off as a memoir about my childhood really evolved into a book about humility — and how being humble isn’t the same thing as being aware,” he added.

He also highlighted how “show business in general is not really a safe space for young people.”

“Ironically, show business puts a high premium on staying young but you can’t let that get the best of you. Because everybody has to grow up,” he shared. “Everybody has to mature.”

Growing Up Urkel is out Tuesday, Nov. 19.
