The Gaza Strip was plunged into near darkness Wednesday night into early Thursday after the area’s sole power station cut out Wednesday.
The power supply ran out of fuel with only generators remaining that are not expected to last long, according to the Associated Press. The lone station had been working intermittently for day before it finally shut down, Reuters reported.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared Hamas to ISIS on Wednesday and vowed that Israel’s retaliation against the terrorist group “will reverberate with them for generations.”
The death toll now stands at 1,200 in Israel, including 14 Americans, and another 1,100 in Gaza. Roughly 150 are believed to be taken hostage, including Americans. Hamas is threatening to execute them.
President Joe Biden said in televised remarks on the conflict Tuesday that his administration would advise on hostage recovery. “I have no higher priority than the safety of Americans being held hostage around the world,” he said.
