The Islanders became the latest NHL club to pay tribute to actor Matthew Perry, who died over the weekend at the age of 54 in an apparent drowning accident.
During the first period of Monday’s game against the Red Wings, the team remembered the beloved “Friends” actor by playing a short clip on the video board at UBS Arena before flashing to a picture of Perry accompanied by the show’s theme song, “I’ll Be There for You” by the Rembrandts.
The clip was from the series finale as Perry’s character, Chandler Bing, says goodbye to Joey Tribbiani, who was played by Matt LeBlanc.
Perry played the character on the hit TV show during its entire 10-year run from 1994 to 2004.
Several NHL teams paid tribute to the late actor over the weekend following the shocking news of his death.
Perry, who grew up in Canada, was an avid hockey fan and supported the Senators and Kings.
The Senators shared a clip of Perry from when he attended a game and in the post described Perry as “one of Ottawa’s proudest sons and the biggest hockey fan.”
The organist at Crypto.com Arena played the “Friends” theme during Saturday’s game between the Kings and Vegas Golden Knights.
A similar scene occurred during the Predators game at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday.
While Perry had connections to the Senators and Kings organizations, he did have a small connection to the Islanders as well.
Perry participated in a celebrity all-star game with Islanders alumni in March 1999 at Nassau Coliseum.

In an episode of “NHL Cool Shots” that aired that same year, Perry said he played on a line with Bob Nystrom during the game.
In part of the episode, Perry explained what motivated him to participate in the charity game.
“One, the funny reason, is that we get to, as actors, pretend that we’re pro hockey players for a weekend,” Perry said. “Our sticks sometimes have our names on it just like the pros and that’s fun. And then just to be able to have fun while doing good for different charities around the world, it’s perfect.
“That’s why we all come out. We’re making money for really good causes and we get to pretend like we’re pros.”
Perry was found unresponsive in his hot tub on Saturday at his Los Angeles home.
Officials received a phone call reporting that the late actor was found underwater in his hot tub and not breathing, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The fire department arrived at 4:07 p.m. and police arrived on the scene three minutes later.
