Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s speed and the Mets’ latest series of unfortunate events combined for a wild top of the seventh inning — which ended with a steal of home.
The Yankees and Mets were tied entering the seventh Wednesday night at Citi Field before Kiner-Falefa stepped up to bat, and then the game got wacky.
With one out and Jeff Brigham on the mound, the Yankees had Josh Donaldson (who walked) on second base and Anthony Rizzo (who was hit by a pitch) on first.
Kiner-Falefa grounded to shortstop Francisco Lindor, who flipped to Jeff McNeil for one out.
McNeil did not have a chance to get IKF but tried anyway.
His throw to first was wide of Mark Vientos, who tried to keep his foot on the base while diving for the ball.
It glanced off his glove and toward the Mets’ dugout, which enabled Donaldson to score the go-ahead run on an error.
But the errors were only just beginning.
With Billy McKinney up, Kiner-Falefa took off for second base.
Francisco Alvarez bounced the throw into center field, which allowed IKF to keep running to third.
Kiner-Falefa was not content at third, though.
He took a huge lead off the bag with lefty Brooks Raley on the mound and with Mets third baseman Eduardo Escobar far from the base.
When Kiner-Falefa reached about halfway down the line, he took off for home.
Raley delivered a high pitch that went to the backstop, and Kiner-Falefa had safely stolen home for a 3-1 Yankees lead.
It was the Yankees’ first steal of home since Didi Gregorius did so in August 2016 against the Orioles.
