Playing Jon Hamm’s family members in an Apple TV+ drama from Jonathan Tropper? For Your Friends and Neighbors stars Lena Hall, Isabell Gravitt, and Donovan Colan, say less.

Talking with DECIDER about the drama that follows Andrew “Coop” Cooper (Hamm) — a down-on-his-luck hedge fund manager — stealing from his wealthy neighbors and getting caught up in way more than he bargained for, the trio shared what brought them to the show in the first place.

“I was immediately just like — I saw Tropper, Apple TV+, and I saw Jon Hamm, and I was like, ‘Jesus Christ, oh my God, what an opportunity,'” said Gravitt, who plays Hamm’s daughter in the series. “And then I read the pilot — obviously, it was fantastic.”

Also filling out the family is Coop’s ex-wife Mel (Amanda Peet), their son Hunter (Colan), and Coop’s sister Ali (Hall). For Hall, the series was a no-brainer on so many levels, including the one where she saw herself on the page, maybe a little too much.

“I was given an audition, you know, a self-tape, and I read the scene and I was like, ‘Oh, so this is just me on a page,'” she said with a laugh. “Basically, it opens like I’m playing guitar and singing a Radiohead song, and that couldn’t be more me.”

To find out more about what led them to the project, how they found the familial chemistry with Hamm, and what is still to come in the Apple TV+ project, check out our full interview below.

DECIDER: Tell me a little bit about how the show came to you and what really appealed to you in the first place about the project.

LENA HALL: “Well, I was given an audition, you know, a self-tape, and I read the scene and I was like, “Oh, so this is just me on a page.” Basically, it opens like I’m playing guitar and singing a Radiohead song, and that couldn’t be more me, because I’m very music-based. And I was, like, “Alright.” The cool thing is that Jonathan Tropper definitely leans into ourselves as people, and he writes us into our characters more and more as he gets to know us. So that, even just in the very first audition, what drew me to this show — and I thought I would never book it because usually if you think you are the part, you just like never get the role — it was so me written on the page. I was like, “This is 00 it’s so easy.” And then when I got the role I was, “Wow. Oh my God. I can’t believe it.”

ISABEL GRAVITT: I think for me, reading the pilot, I was immediately just — I saw Tropper, Apple TV+, and I saw Jon Hamm, and I was like, “Jesus Christ, oh my God, what an opportunity.” And then I read the pilot — obviously, it was fantastic. Everything from the music choices on the page to how witty and sharp it is and how layered all of these characters are and how all of the storylines intertwine. As for Tori, I just was really excited about her directness and how confident she is. And yeah, I’m really lucky that I get to do this and be here.

DONOVAN COLAN: I mean, me too. I was kind of just playing myself. I also am interested in music and I play piano. I’m a drummer. The piano was also an example of Tropper adding in stuff afterward. He just kind of offered [and asked] if I could play piano in a scene, I was like, “Yeah, sure. I’ll play one of my own compositions. I’m fine with it.”

I love that. I also love the family connection you guys have. How did you guys find that familial bond and chemistry on set with Jon Hamm?

HALL: It was very easy. Jon is very open and very collaborative and also very fun, at least for me. So I don’t know about you guys, but very fun for me and it was easy to get that brother-sister dynamic going just because he feels very — he feels like he will protect you. Like he feels like a huggy bear that’s going to protect you no matter what. And so that was what was really fun to develop. It didn’t take long for us to develop that dynamic at all because he was just instantly there. And so I felt really comfortable. I was like, “Yeah, you’ve been my brother for my whole life,” which is what it was supposed to be.

GRAVITT: I think same here. I think it was just really easy and immediately any nerves were just kind of dissolved because he just makes you feel super comfortable and super protected. I think he really looks out for us and he’s super generous as an actor and as a person and just truly just it’s a master class coming to work every day just being able to watch these actors.

COLAN: I don’t really know what I can add onto that.

Well, one of my favorite things about a new show is hearing what friends and family members of those in the project have to say. What are you hoping to hear from your own friends and neighbors?

HALL: “Oh my God, you’re so good. You’re fantastic. I loved that song that you sang and then your acting looks really good.”

GRAVITT: I think it really keeps you on your toes. I feel like after every episode, you just want more. And so I hope people are just wanting to see the next episode and texting me, asking me what’s happening next, and I just can’t tell them. I love that.

COLAN: They might be begging for spoilers.

HALL: I just hope people are like, “When’s Season 2 coming out?” Do you know what I mean? [I hope] there’s that excitement of it. And they’re mad like, “Wait, this is airing once a week?

GRAVITT: They don’t want to wait, “I want for it all to pile up and then I’m going to binge it.” No, you have to experience it as it builds.

Well, speaking of, we only got seven of nine episodes. Anything you want to tease?

HALL: [Episodes] 8 and 9, stuff happens. A lot of stuff happens. I love 8 and 9. That’s all we can say. It’s really great! We’re making it worse for you.
