Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch are out for marital blood in The Roses—the 2025 remake of 1989’s The War of the Roses—opening in theaters this weekend.
Directed by Jay Roach, with a screenplay by Tony McNamara (a writer known for his collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos on The Favourite and Poor Things), The Roses stars Cumberbatch as Theo Rose, a successful architect who falls in love with an aspiring chef, Ivy (Colman). Years later, Theo and Rose are married with kids, and their relationship has soured. Theo’s career comes to a halt after an architectural disaster, while Ivy’s takes off and launches a culinary empire. Little things become big things over the years, until Theo and Ivy are, quite literally, at each other’s throats.
The Roses is a modern-day take on the 1989 dark comedy starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito, which itself was an adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel. Also starring Andy Samberg, Alison Janney, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and Kate McKinnon, The Roses is a guaranteed fun time in the movie theater. But if you’d rather wait to watch it at home, read on to find out when we expect to be able to watch The Roses on streaming.
The Roses will only be available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in the U.S. on Friday, August 29. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. The Roses is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.
The Roses is not streaming on Netflix or Amazon, and likely will not be on Netflix any time soon, due to the fact that it is not a Netflix film. The Roses is a Searchlight Pictures release, which is a studio that is owned by Disney. While some Searchlight films go to Disney+, most end up on the more adult-friendly streamer Hulu, which is also owned by Disney.
You will be able to purchase The Roses on Prime Video eventually, when the movie becomes available to buy and rent on digital, but you will not be able to stream The Roses on Prime Video free with a Prime subscription anytime soon. If you want to watch The Roses movie at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms, or wait for it to stream on Hulu.

The Roses is not yet streaming on Hulu. Right now, the movie is only in theaters. We do expect to see The Roses streaming on Hulu eventually, but we’re not sure when. Another Searchlight release, A Complete Unknown, was released on digital about two months after the film opened in theaters, and was released on Hulu about three months after the movie opened in theaters.
If The Roses follows a similar release pattern, you might see the movie on digital around late October 2025, and streaming on Hulu around late November 2025. (Provided the Hulu app isn’t phased out before then.)
