Eleanor the Great, the divisive new film directed by Scarlett Johansson, opens in U.S. movie theaters this weekend. Now you can finally see the movie that Decider contributor Siddhant Adlakha called the Dear Evan Hansen for Holocaust survivors!

Directed by Johansson in her fiction feature directorial debut, with a screenplay written by Tory Kamen, Eleanor the Great is a character-driven drama starring Oscar-winner June Squibb as a 94-year-old Floridian woman who befriends a 19-year-old from New York City named Nina (played by Erin Kellyman). The film received mixed reviews when it premiered at Cannes in the spring, with critics praising Squibb’s performance, though criticizing Johansson’s lack of directorial vision. But now audiences will have a chance to judge the movie for themselves.

Also starring Jessica Hecht and Chiwetel Ejiofor, Eleanor the Great sounds like a moving watch. If you’d rather wait to watch the movie at home, read on to find out when we expect to be able to watch Eleanor the Great streaming on Netflix.

Eleanor the Great will only be available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in the U.S. nationwide on Friday, September 26. You can find a showing near you via FandangoEleanor the Great is not yet available to watch online or on streaming, but we do expect to be able to watch Eleanor the Great Netflix eventually.

Eleanor the Great is not currently streaming on Netflix or Amazon, because the movie is being released in theaters, only. Right now, the only way to watch Eleanor the Great is in a movie theater. That said, because Eleanor the Great is a Sony movie, being released in the U.S. via Sony Pictures Classics, so we do expect to see it streaming on Netflix eventually.

You will be able to purchase Eleanor the Great on Prime Video eventually, when the movie becomes available to buy and rent on digital, but you will not be able to stream Eleanor the Great on Prime Video free with a Prime subscription any time soon. If you want to watch Eleanor the Great movie at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms, or wait for Eleanor the Great to stream on Netflix.

Netflix offers three subscription plans to fit your streaming needs. The plans start at $7.99/month for standard with ads and go up to $24.99/month for unlimited ad-free streaming in up to 4K UHD quality.

Eleanor the Great will likely be on Netflix sometime in early 2026. Netflix has a deal with Sony Pictures that gives the streamer the rights to the Sony movies in the “Pay 1” window, meaning the first streaming window after the film’s home media release. Another recent Sony Classic movie, On Swift Horses, came to Netflix about four months after opening in theaters.

If Eleanor the Great follows this same release pattern, you can expect to stream the Eleanor the Great movie on Netflix around late January 2026, aka four months after the movie opened in theaters. In the meantime, you can go watch the movie in theaters.
