The new biopic A Million Miles Away tells the story of José Hernandez, a Mexican immigrant and a son of migrant farmers, who ultimately achieved his dream of becoming an astronaut at NASA. After being rejected by NASA 11 times, he was eventually selected to be on the Space Shuttle mission STS-128, which launched on Aug. 28, 2009.
Based on Hernandez’s autobiography Reaching for the Stars: The Inspiring Story of a Migrant Farmworker Turned Astronaut, the film tells Hernandez’s (played by Michael Peña) inspiring story of becoming NASA’s first Mexican-American astronaut.
Decider contributor John Serba deemed the film — which was released on streaming today — a “feelgood inspirational bio,” and highlighted Peña’s work as “perennially underrated.”

More importantly, though, our Decider review of A Million Miles Away is a firm STREAM IT. As John Serba writes: “Despite its rickety foundation, the movie works for the most part, pushing past some of the rote look-at-all-the-sacrifices-Jose’s-family-made-for-him melodrama to emphasize the challenges a Mexican-American man must overcome to achieve a wild dream.”
