Cillian Murphy is following up his Oscar-winning role in Oppenheimer with a new period drama, Small Things Like These, which opens in U.S. theaters this weekend.

Directed by Tim Mielants, with a screenplay by Enda Walsh, Small Things Like These is based on the 2021 historical fiction novel by Claire Keegan. Set in the small, working-class town of New Ross, Ireland in 1985, the story revolves around the true story of Irish Magdalene asylums, which were prisons where “fallen women” (often code for sex workers, or other undesirable women) were forced to live and work washing clothes, as slaves. Cillian Murphy stars as Bill Furlong, a fictional coal merchant who uncovers one of these horrific institutions.

Also starring Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, Emily Watson, Clare Dunne, and Helen Behan, Small Things Like These sounds like a depressing but fascinating watch.

Here’s what you need to know about where to watch Small Things Like These and when to expect to see Small Things Like These on streaming.

For now, Small Things Like These will only available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in select theaters in the U.S. on Friday, November 8. (It opened in theaters in UK and Ireland on November 1.) You can find a showing near you via Fandango. Small Things Like These is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.

Small Things Like These is not streaming on Netflix or Max, and likely will not be on Netflix or Max any time soon, due to the fact that the film is a Lionsgate release in the U.K., and will likely stream on Starz, the streaming platform owned by Lionsgate, instead. That said, the movie is being released by Roadside Attractions in the U.S., so it’s possible you won’t see Small Things Like These streaming on Starz, either.

You will be able to purchase Small Things Like These on Amazon Prime Video eventually, when the movie becomes available to buy and rent on digital, but you will not be able to stream Small Things Like These Ever on Prime Video free with a Prime subscription, because it is not a Prime original movie. If you want to watch Small Things Like These movie at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms, or wait for it to stream on Starz.

Small Things Like These is not yet streaming on Starz. You might see Small Things Like These on Starz in spring 2025, because that is the streaming platform owned by Lionsgate. Another Lionsgate film, The Strangers: Chapter 1, was released on “premium” video-on-demand after three weeks in theaters, and began streaming on Starz on September 30, about four and a half months after the movie opened in the theaters. If Small Things Like These follows the same release pattern, you can expect to see the movie on Starz in about four and a half months, which would be around March 2025.

That said, Small Things Like These is being distributed by Roadside Attractions in the U.S., not Lionsgate. Therefore, it’s possible that Small Things Like These will not end up on any subscription-based streamer. If that’s the case, you’ll have to wait to buy or rent the film when it hits video-on-demand. A previous Roadsides film, Lee, was released on digital on October 18, which is three weeks after the movie opened in theaters. Based on this, you might see Small Things Like These available to buy and rent online in three weeks, around November 29.

But this is all speculation. If you want to watch Small Things Like These right away, you can watch it in a movie theater.
