Production finally seems to be ramping up on the highly anticipated Spaceballs sequel. But will Rick Moranis be reprising his role in the new sci-fi parody?
According to a new image from Amazon MGM Studios, it looks like several of the original stars will be returning for this brand new installment, which is officially beginning production almost 30 years after the original sci-fi parody hit theaters.
And it looks like the jokes have already begun. Amazon MGM Studios shared a photo of the Spaceballs 2 cast doing a table read. But the image is clearly spoofing the infamous, behind-the-scenes photo of the cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Though it’s a cheeky nod to the movie’s Star Wars roots, the photo also reveals just who fans should expect to star in Spaceballs 2 when it hits theaters in 2027.
Variety reports Bill Pullman will be reprising his role as Lone Starr, as will Mel Brooks who is producing and returning as Yogurt. Daphne Zuniga and George Wyner will also be returning for the sequel.
Some new stars will also be appearing in the sequel. Pullman’s son, Marvel star Lewis Pullman, will be joining the cast, as will Keke Palmer and Josh Gad.
Moranis led the 1987 sci-fi comedy Spaceballs as Lord Dark Helmet, marking one of the final live-action roles of his career. Will the comedy legend be returning for Spaceballs 2?
Rick Moranis will be reprising his role of Lord Dark Helmet, putting an end to his decades-long retirement from live-action acting.
This will mark the first live-action movie Moranis has appeared in since 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. In the years since, Moranis has done some voice acting on animated series such as The Goldbergs.
The new sequel will be directed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar director Josh Greenbaum. Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez co-wrote the script.
Details regarding Spaceballs 2 are being kept under the wraps, with an Amazon MGM press release stating that “the title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.” The film has also previously been described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”
Brooks, who co-wrote and directed the film in addition to starring, confirmed the news in June in a video announcement that ridiculed how saturated the sci-fi genre has become.
“After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this movie,” he said. “May the Schwartz be with you.”
Spaceballs 2 is expected to hit theaters in 2027.
