NextImg:Is ‘Origin’ Streaming on Netflix or HBO Max?

It won’t be long until Origin hits theaters. Luckily, we have you covered on all the ways you can watch this new biographical drama!

Directed by Ava DuVernay and inspired by a true story, Origin follows writer Isabel Wilkerson (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) as she pens Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, which describes racism in America in terms of a caste system.

Aside from Ellis-Taylor, the movie also stars Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash-Betts, Victoria Pedretti and Vera Farmiga.

So, where can you watch Origin? Is it on Max? What about Netflix?

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming movie:

As of now, the only way to watch Origin is to head out to a movie theater when it releases on Friday, Jan. 19. You can find a local showing on Fandango. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait until it becomes available to rent or purchase on digital platforms like Vudu, Apple, YouTube and Amazon or available to stream on Hulu. Read on for more information.

Yes, Origin will eventually be available to stream on Hulu thanks to a deal penned between the streaming platform and Neon. While a release date has not yet been announced, we can make an estimate based on another film that was distributed by the production company.

It Lives Inside, which premiered on Sept. 22, officially came to Hulu on Dec. 29 — about three months after it debuted in theaters. If Origin follows the same trajectory, it could join the platform by late April 2024.

No, Origin will not be on Max since it’s not a Warner Bros. movie. The platform — previously known as HBO Max — also no longer does direct-to-streaming releases. Instead, they’ve implemented a 45-day window between the theatrical release and the Max release.

No, Origin will not be on Netflix — at least not any time soon. While it’s possible the movie may come to the streamer at some point in the future, you’ll just have to head out to a theater or wait for it to become available on Hulu in the meantime.
