Love it or hate it, Joker 2, aka Joker: Folie à Deux releases in theaters this weekend. And you better believe that Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga are going to be sharing that madness.
Like the 2019 Joker film, Joker: Folie à Deux was directed by Todd Phillips, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. Phoenix reprises his role as famed Batman villain Arthur Fleck, aka The Joker. In the first film, Arthur Fleck was a poor, lonely stand-up comedian who was suffering from a mental illness that caused him to laugh at inappropriate moments. In this sequel, Arthur has embraced his new role as a criminal who dresses up as a clown. He meets Harley Quinn (played by pop star Lady Gaga), a patient at a psychiatric hospital who becomes obsessed with all things Joker. Kinda like your ex-boyfriend back in 2019.
Also starring Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, and Catherine Keener, Joker: Folie à Deux is certain to be just as controversial as the first film. But if you want to see it for yourself, read on to find out where to watch Joker: Folie à Deux and when we expect to see Joker: Folie à Deux on streaming.
Right now, Joker: Folie à Deux is only available to watch in a movie theater. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. However, we do expect Joker 2 to be on streaming eventually, and you can watch the first Joker movie on Max in the meantime.
Joker: Folie à Deux is not streaming on Netflix and likely will not be on Netflix any time soon, due to the fact that the film is a Warner Bros. release, will have a streaming home on HBO’s Max. If you want to watch the new Joker: Folie à Deux movie at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms, or wait for it to stream on Max.
Joker: Folie à Deux is not yet streaming on Max. Right now, the movie is only in theaters. That said, we do expect to see Joker 2 streaming on Max eventually—but we’re not sure when.
All the new WB theatrical movies end up streaming on Max, though the wait period has varied by title. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, for example, was released on PVOD four weeks after opening in theaters, and began streaming on Max on August 16, about three months after it was released in theaters. If Joker: Folie à Deux follows a similar release pattern, you may see Joker 2 streaming on Max in about three months—around January 2024.
But that’s pure speculation. In the meantime, you can always catch Joker: Folie à Deux in theaters, and watch the first Joker movie streaming on Max.
