The new Ron Howard movie Eden, which opens in theaters this weekend, will speak to anyone who’s had a tropical vacation go wrong.
Directed by Howard, with a screenplay by Noah Pink, Eden is based on the true story of European settlers who came to Floreana Island, in the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador, expecting to find paradise. As it turns out, life on a tropical island was a lot harder than they expected.
Jude Law stars as Dr. Friedrich Ritter, a German doctor who thinks that absconding to a remote location, free from capitalism, will help him write his manifesto. His wife Dora (Vanessa Kirby) comes along, believing she can cure her MS via meditation. Needless to say, they are both incorrect.
Also starring Sydney Sweeney, Daniel Brühl, Felix Kammerer, Toby Wallace and Richard Roxburgh, Eden is a survival thriller that speaks to the hubris of mankind. Read on to learn more about where to watch the Eden movie, and when we expect to be able to watch Eden on streaming.
For now, Eden will only be available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in select theaters in the U.S. on Friday, August 22. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. Eden is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.
Eden is not streaming on Netflix or Prime Video right now. While it’s possible Eden may stream on Netflix someday, it won’t be until after the theatrical run and digital release of the movie. Eden is not a Netflix original—it’s a small, independent film being distributed by Vertical in the U.S.
You will be able to purchase Eden on Prime Video eventually, when the movie becomes available to buy and rent on digital, but you will not be able to stream Eden on Prime Video free with a Prime subscription any time soon, because it is not a Prime original movie. If you want to watch Eden movie at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms.
That said, several other releases from Vertical Entertainment have gone on to stream on Max, so it’s possible you might see the Eden movie streaming on Max in the future.
Eden is not currently streaming on Max, but may be streaming on Max someday. While there is no formal (or, at least, publicly known) output deal between Vertical Entertainment, two previous 2024 Vertical movies, Your Monster and Elevation, began streaming on Max a little over three months after the movies opened in theaters. That said, none of the 2025 Vertical movies have gone on to Max at this point, so don’t hold your breath.
The Eden digital release date has not yet been announced. However, we can make an educated guess as to when we might see Eden on video-on-demand, based on the digital release of previous films from this studio, Vertical.
Another Vertical movie, Sacramento, was released in theaters on April 11, and was released on digital platforms on April 29, about two-and-a-half weeks after opening in theaters. If Eden follows a similar pattern, you might see the Eden movie on video-on-demand around the second week of September 2025.
But this is all speculation. Digital releases vary by title, and Eden is a bigger movie than Sacramento, so it may stay in theaters for longer. If you want to see Eden right away, you can catch the movie in a theater.
