It’s been five years since Sandra Bullock stumbled around blindfolded in Netflix’s hit horror movie, Bird Box. Now, a movie titled Bird Box Barcelona is coming to Netflix this weekend. It’s only natural to assume that this new Bird Box movie is a sequel to the 2018 film… right?
Wrong. In a somewhat new movie strategy, Netflix has opted to offer its international audience a spin-off-slash-reboot movie. This new Spanish-language Bird Box movie employs the same concept as the U.S. Bird Box movie—a post-apocalyptic world full of monsters that, when seen, causes humans to go insane and kill themselves—but features a cast of non-American, non-English speaking characters. The film is written and directed by Spanish filmmakers Álex and David Pastor, and follows a father named Sebastian (Mario Casas) and his daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard) as they attempt to survive.

Bird Box Barcelona is not a sequel to Bird Box. It is a Spanish-language spin-off movie that takes place in the Bird Box universe. None of the characters in the first Bird Box movie are in the new Bird Box movie.
That said, the monster is still the same. The events of Bird Box Barcelona take place more or less at the same time as the events of Bird Box, just in a different part of the world. If you’re curious what the people in Barcelona were up to while Sandra Bullock was white-water rafting in a blindfold, this is the movie for you.
Sandra Bullock does not show up in Bird Box Barcelona cast, not even for a cameo. None of the original Bird Box cast are featured in the Bird Box Barcelona cast. So if you’re hoping to see Sandy back at it, this is not the movie for you.
The Bird Box Barcelona cast is made up of Spanish and other non-American actors, including award-winning Spanish actor Mario Casas (Cross the Line), award-winning English actor Georgina Campbell (Barbarian), award-winning Mexican actor Diego Calva (Narcos), and more. Bird Box Barcelona is a Spanish-language film. There is a dubbed English version of Bird Box Barcelona on Netflix if you’d prefer to watch the film in English, but it was originally filmed in Spanish.
