In case the animated Disney Bambi movie wasn’t traumatizing enough as is, now there’s a genuine horror retelling of the story of the young deer living his life in the woods: Bambi: The Reckoning, which opens in theaters this weekend.
Directed by Dan Allen, with a screenplay written by Rhys Warrington, Bambi: The Reckoning is (loosely) based on Felix Salten’s 1923 novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods. Rather than a cute little fawn, this Bambi is a huge, grief-stricken, raging buck who is hellbent on avenging the death of his mother. That’s bad news for Xana (Roxanne McKee) and her son, who accidentally hit a deer with their car.
Bambi: The Reckoning is the fourth movie in The Twisted Childhood Universe (TCU), which is a series of British independent horror movies based on corrupting beloved children’s characters, including Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, and Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare. If you liked those movies, you’ll probably have a good time with Bambi: The Reckoning, too. Here’s what to know about where to watch Bambi: The Reckoning and when we expect to see Bambi: The Reckoning on digital.
For now, Bambi: The Reckoning will only be available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in select theaters in the U.S. on Friday, July 25. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. Bambi: The Reckoning is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.
Bambi: The Reckoning is not streaming on Netflix or Prime Video right now. While it’s possible Bambi: The Reckoning may stream on Netflix someday, it won’t be until after the theatrical run and digital release of the movie. Bambi: The Reckoning is not a Netflix original—it’s a small, independent British film being distributed by ITN Distribution, and part of the Twisted Childhood Universe (TCU). Never say never, but so far, none of the TCU movies have gone on to stream on Netflix.
You will be able to purchase Bambi: The Reckoning on Prime Video eventually, when the movie becomes available to buy and rent on digital, but you will not be able to stream Bride Hard for free on Prime Video any time soon, because it is not a Prime original movie. If you want to watch the Bambi: The Reckoning movie at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms.
The Bambi: The Reckoning movie digital release date has not yet been announced. However, we can make an educated guess as to when we might see Bambi: The Reckoning on video-on-demand, based on the digital release of previous films from ITN Distribution.
Another ITN Distribution movie from the Twisted Childhood Universe, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, was released on digital just two-and-a-half weeks after opening in theaters last year. If Bambi: The Reckoning follows a similar pattern, you might see the movie on video-on-demand in about two-and-a-half week’s time, around August 13, 2025.
But this is all speculation. Digital releases vary by title. If you want to see Bambi: The Reckoning right away, you can catch the movie in a theater.
