Iowa State probably wasn’t happy with losing Saturday, and probably even less happy after they saw the replay of a field from the fourth quarter.
The Cyclones fell in an upset to MAC opponent Ohio, 10-7, on the road at Peden Stadium, but a controversial call on a field goal may have swayed the outcome of the game.
Down 10-0 with 7:26 left in the fourth quarter, Iowa State lined up for a 37-yard field goal attempt from the right hashmark.
Redshirt senior Chase Contreraz, who’d already missed a 47-yard kick on the first play of the second quarter, lined up for the kick that sailed right and near the upright, which the officials ruled was no good.
But immediately, there appeared to be some question marks about the call — especially with the ensuing replay angle under the goal posts.
Although there is not 100 percent certainty, the replay angle appeared to show the ball staying inside the right post, which should’ve been a good field goal.
“Wow, it at least should have been looked at, in my opinion,” Rocky Boiman said on the ESPN broadcast. “Maybe they did talk about it, but we got no indication they did. … Those two angles, that thing looked like it was in.”
The call hurt the Cyclones more later in the quarter when quarterback Rocco Becht connected for an 18-yard passing touchdown to Jayden Higgins.
The Hurricanes had one last chance to score in the fourth with 2:13 left, but Becht was picked off to seal the win for Ohio, which moved to 3-1 while Iowa State dropped to 1-2.
The call on the kick may have been one of the ultimate deciders, but Ohio did a solid job holding Iowa State to just 271 yards of total offense.
Iowa State takes on Big 12 foe Oklahoma State next Saturday as it looks to get back on track after the tough loss.
