Investigators have identified a child playing with a lighter as the preliminary cause of the fire that damaged Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill’s Florida mansion, according to CBS News Miami.
“The investigation identified that the fire was an accidental and was caused by a child playing with a lighter within a bedroom where the fire started,” said Robert Taylor, fire marshal with Davie Fire Rescue, according to CBS News Miami. “Fortunately, all occupants of the home were able to evacuate safely, and there were no injuries.”
Firefighters were summoned Wednesday before 2 p.m. ET to Hill’s Southwest Ranches home, which he purchased for $6.9 million in 2022, per WSVN 7 News.
It was classified as a two-alarm fire.
Firefighters needed about 45 minutes to put out the fire, which left a “gaping hole in the roof” and “substantial smoke and water damage inside,” per CBS.
Hill, 29, was practicing with the Dolphins at the time of the fire, and the wide receiver left the practice facility to attend to the situation.
Drew Rosenhaus, Hill’s agent, said some family members were present when the fire broke out. He added that it was mostly confined to one room.
“He and his family are safe,” Rosenhaus said. “No one was injured No. 1, no pets, so for that, we’re very grateful. We’re very grateful to the firefighters that put the fire out. Thankfully, the fire was contained to a limited area in the home. Obviously, there’ll be some smoke and water damage.
“It’s very difficult for anybody obviously to have your home catch on fire, but Tyreek was handling it, he and his family, with as much poise as you could hope.”
Hill appeared at the scene wearing a brace on his left leg, according to CBS, but Rosenhaus said Hill expects to play Sunday when the Dolphins host the Bills with the AFC East on the line.
Miami will be the No. 2 seed in the AFC with a win, while the Dolphins will drop to the No. 6 seed and face the Chiefs in Kansas City with a loss.
Hill, who earned his eighth Pro Bowl nod in eight seasons on Wednesday, has an NFL-leading 1,717 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns this season.
