Edwin Diaz has some brand new bling!
The 29-year-old Mets closer, who has been sidelined all season with a torn right patellar tendon that was sustained while celebrating in the World Baseball Classic, commissioned a pricey pendant that features a blaring trumpet and his number 39.
The trumpet, of course, represents the song “Narco” by Timmy Trumpet, the electric entrance music to which Diaz takes the mound at Citi Field.
New York jeweler Victor Rodriguez, who goes by the name Tajia Diamonds, told TMZ that the pendant is worth $250,000, that it was comprised of F color stones and VS diamonds, and that the chain was also made with VS diamonds.
Diaz has been expected to miss the entire season for the Mets after his celebration injury, but sparked some excitement when he was spotted throwing at Citi Field on Friday.
“It’s very exciting,’’ Mets pitcher Adam Ottavino remarked about Diaz’s progress.
“I just want our guy back. He seems great and is saying he can throw 95 [mph] right now. I just want our guy back and the trumpets to play.”
David Robertson has been filling in for Diaz in the closer role and has accumulated 10 saves this season.
Last year, Diaz had a 1.31 ERA and 32 saves, with 118 strikeouts in 62 innings pitched.
In the offseason, he signed a five-year contract with the Mets worth $102 million.
The Mets have been a disappointing 34-39 this season; they are 13 games behind the Braves for first place in the NL East.
They are also six games out of the third wild-card spot in the NL, and would need to leapfrog six other teams to get there.
