There was a major shakeup in the Heisman Trophy race on Tuesday.

Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza took over as the betting favorite after news dropped that Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer would be undergoing right-hand surgery, taking him out for at least a month.

Mendoza jumped to +650 at FanDuel Sportsbook to win the Heisman, which is ahead of Oregon quarterback Dante Moore and Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who round out the top three at +1100.

It’s been an unbelievable rise for Mendoza, who transferred from California before the season.

Before the year, BetMGM had Mendoza at +5500 to win the Heisman, which was well outside the top-20 of the sportsbook’s odds board.

As recently as last week, Mendoza was +2500.

In four games, Mendoza has thrown for 975 yards with an FBS-leading 14 touchdown passes and zero interceptions.

On Saturday, Mendoza led the Hoosiers to a massive 63-10 win over Illinois in one of the most important Big Ten matchups of the year.

Mateer had been +700 at BetMGM Sportsbook after the undefeated Sooners took down Auburn on Saturday.

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables said he expects that Mateer, who suffered the injury during the win over the Tigers, will return to the field at some point this season, but the missed time will likely take him out of the Heisman running.

“After consulting with medical experts, it became clear that surgery is the best option for John and his short- and long-term future,” Venables told reporters. “He’s extremely disappointed he will miss some game action but is eager to correct the issue and move forward. As he is with everything, we know he will be aggressive with his rehabilitation and work to return to the field as quickly as possible.”
