The truth will set you free — even if the truth involves one’s work in the underground porn industry. The trailer for Viaplay’s new offbeat dramedy series In the Name of Love shows us that the series really does have everything — love, sex, repressed Norwegians, and a treasure trove of dirty family secrets.

The unconventional coming-of-age story begins with a reunion of the Bang family and a chaste baptism of Balder’s (Jakob Oftebro) daughter. Suddenly, Balder’s estranged father Lars (Trond Espen Seim) crashes the party and spills the beans on where the family wealth really comes from. You see, Balder and his brother Bjørnar (Jonas Oftebro) were raised by two very different people: their mother, Anne-Lise (Maria Bonnevie), a modest primary school teacher and feminist, and Lars, an underground porn businessman who got rich by protesting conservative 1970s Norwegian culture through eroticism. Anne-Lise kept the business hidden from her children for as long as possible, but once the truth comes out, nothing can ever be the same.

According to a press release, the eight-part series was directed by award-winning Norwegian director Bård Breien, who based the show on the shocking, untold story of his real life and childhood. The narrative will shift between time periods, following the rise and fall of the risqué family empire from the 1970s into the 1990s, “through the VHS boom, censorship crackdowns, and shifting social norms. As past and present collide, Balder is forced to confront the legacy he tried to leave behind—and ask whether love can survive the truth.” The show as a whole promises to be “a journey of how opposites attract and sometimes collide, of freedom and perceived decency, and of family conflict and resolution.”

In the Name of Love premieres on Viaplay Sept. 8, and will drop two episodes weekly through Sept. 29. Don’t miss it!
