NextImg:Imposing call-ups Matt Rempe, Adam Edstrom look ready to help Rangers

You couldn’t miss the two extra forwards the Rangers had on the ice for practice on Sunday.

The towering 6-foot-8 Matt Rempe and the imposing 6-7 Adam Edstrom joined the team at MSG Training Center after both skaters were recalled to the varsity club shortly after wrapping up the AHL Wolf Pack’s 4-1 loss to the Providence Bruins on Saturday night in Hartford.

Word is Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury and director of player development Jed Ortmeyer were in attendance — something that isn’t unusual, but worth noting.

“We’re dealing with a couple of things in the room, so that was part of it,” head coach Peter Laviolette said after an energetic practice Sunday in Tarrytown, presumably referring to Artemi Panarin’s looming paternity leave. “They had played [Saturday night]. Edstrom was a guy who played really well for us [on Dec. 15 vs. the Ducks]. In the game, he was playing well. At the time he got the recall, we moved him back because we needed to. Shortly after that, he got banged up. Played [Saturday night], he was back healthy and played really well. Just getting him back up here in the mix.

“Just wanted to get a feel for these two guys up here. Rempe has moved to the middle for pretty much the last month. Played really well, I think he played 14 minutes [Saturday night]. So I just want to get eyes on him and get a look at him, as well.”

Edstrom took first reps on the right wing of the fourth line alongside Jimmy Vesey and Barclay Goodrow on Sunday, indicating the 23-year-old will likely skate in his second NHL game Monday night against the Flames.

Laviolette wouldn’t 100 percent confirm that, but the Rangers’ bench boss said he believes Edstrom will play.

After putting forth a strong performance in his NHL debut, which included a late goal in the Rangers’ 5-1 win over Anaheim, Edstrom was sent back down to the AHL for cap-accrual purposes.

He suffered an upper-body injury that sidelined him for 12 games shortly after.

“Every time you get called up, it’s an opportunity,” the Swede told The Post. “I’m excited. I’m here to capitalize on that opportunity. It’s always special to get called up because it’s a sign you’re doing something good.”

The evolution of Rempe and his standing within the Rangers organization has been intriguing. Here was an undrafted forward in the Western Hockey League who caught the attention of the Rangers, who drafted him 165th overall in 2020.

From the outside, there wasn’t much of an NHL expectation for Rempe, but he has continued to improve year after year. No one can teach size, however, so the 21-year-old has always had that going for him.

Rempe, who was bumped from the fourth line to the second in Hartford on Saturday night, has been much more involved and noticeable for the Wolf Pack this season.

Scoring an AHL career-high of eight goals and dishing four assists thus far, Rempe has also racked up 96 penalty minutes, including seven fights.

He also dropped the gloves with Islanders heavyweight Ross Johnston in the preseason.

The Rangers evidently wanted to get an up-close look at Rempe, who had some extra pep in his step on the ice Sunday.

Rempe noted that Tanner Glass, former Rangers wing turned assistant director of player development, has always believed in him and been in his corner throughout his journey.

“I think that last year just working and learning and working and working, I’ve come a long way,” Rempe told The Post. “Just continuing to work. Down in Hartford, I think I’ve taken big steps this year with my game in all aspects. I think it’s a testament to all my coaches and stuff down there, all the development team have really helped me and believed in me.

“I still got a lot of work to do. I’m just going to continue to do that.”
