It was real, and it was spectacular.
And you can now add Erik Gustafsson to the list of players who have worn a baffled look on their face after an unreal, off-balance stick save by Ilya Sorokin.
The Islanders’ netminder leaned back to deny Gustafsson on what looked like an open-net chance during the first period of Tuesday’s match against the Maple Leafs.
It was reminiscent of similar saves Sorokin made against Artemi Panarin last season at Madison Square Garden and Kris Letang last month at PPG Paints Arena.
There may not be a goaltender in the NHL more skilled with his paddle than Sorokin, whose heroics have helped keep the Islanders in the playoff race all season.
During a period in which the Leafs dominated, the save allowed the Isles to keep their deficit at a manageable one goal, and it was far from the only time Sorokin stepped up to the plate.
It was by far, though, the most jaw-dropping.
