NextImg:I tried the new, reversible ‘feels like nothing’ lululemon sports bra

When I heard lululemon was coming out with a new collection of reversible bras that “feels like nothing” when you wear them, I knew I had to get my hands on one and see if it was actually as good as the reviewers were making it out to be.

Like many twenty-somethings who occasionally work from home, my daily ‘uniform’ is mostly made up of leggings, sports bras, joggers, sweats, and tees. Call it laziness or pure genius, but I like to comfortably roll out of bed into something that I can wear to grab my morning coffee, then layer or ‘accessorize’ for an impromptu Zoom meeting, and finally take to the gym for a sweaty evening yoga class. In other words, I wear a lot of multi-functional activewear.

I’ve been a devout lululemon follower since middle school, but the brand has managed to keep me fixed as a customer through my twenties, especially with more recent, on-trend collections that don’t skimp out on any of the original comfort-driven signature fabrics that make lululemon, lululemon. The latest Bend This drop, which consists of four new lighter-support bras in the Nulu fabric, is my proof that lululemon continues to reign supreme in the category of activewear.

When I started reading some of the reviews for the Bend This collection, I suspected it wouldn’t take long for them to fly off the shelves.

People are practically bending over backward to get these bras (no pun intended: one shopper admitted returning one of their previous purchases just so she could try a Bend This bra).

Women with bigger busts are saying these bras relieve their back pain and help their posture, others who typically don’t wear bras at all are saying they’ve been converted — one writing that the Bend This “offers enough support (36C) to help me keep myself in place and feels like nothing, NADA, bra-less!”

“Bra-less” and “support” seem like oxymorons in the world of activewear — which only meant I needed to put one of these bras to the test as soon as possible. Read on for my full scoop on the new Bend This Scoop and Square Bra and find out why the Bend This collection might just be my favorite lululemon drop to date.

Hint: it’s not just because you might forget you’re wearing a bra altogether.

Pros:

Cons:

One of the biggest gripes I have with sports bras is the fact that I have to choose just one size. Like most women, my cup size fluctuates pretty evidently through my cycle, and I have to own three different bra sizes just to make it through every week with the right amount of support. It’s one of the realities of shopping as a woman — your breasts are going to change, and then change, and change again. lululemon designed the Bend This Bras with cycles in mind. The ultra-stretchy Nulu fabric has been combined with lycra for added flexibility, so these bras feel comfortable during all phases of your cycle (I only wish I’d had one through pregnancy). I’ve tried a range of athletic fabrics from luxtreme to spandex, nylon, and polyester. The Bend This Bra has reminded me why lululemon’s fabric is my favorite. It really does feel like it’s not there.

Another trouble I have with many sports bras is the fact that they’re simply unattractive. Often constructed with rigid tech fabrics, thick straps, and wires meant to hold you in. The natural consequence is typically the dreaded flattened, “uni-boob effect.” My response is to throw on a sleeved shirt and hide it at all costs. But, this is not the case with the Bend This collection. Each bra is reversible front-to-back, offering two completely different looks — plenty of choices for those who prefer square necks, scooped looks, racer cuts, and cross-backs. On top of that, each bra can be styled atop another from the collection for a unique multi-layer look. The creative styling opportunities are truly endless.

Comfort and style aside, it’s important to find a sports bra that provides enough support for the ups, downs, and turns of everyday life. While this is not advertised as a high-impact bra, it does allow much more movement than your typical bra — it even comes with a simple, one-piece bra cup that can be added for more coverage. I put the Scoop and Square Bra to the test for my nightly yoga routine, and have zero qualms. The fabrics are moisture-wicking and quick-drying, which left me feeling less of a sweat-drenched monster as I came out of class. This might not be the bra to take on a high-speed run, but I would easily wear it on a hike or for a pilates class.

I’ve worn plenty of lululemon pieces in my lifetime, but I may just have a new favorite in the Bend This collection. Thankfully these new styles won’t bend the budget too much – given that they’re all marked at $48 and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find a high-quality bra under $50 in this day and age. While I wouldn’t advise running a marathon in this sports bra, it’s easily among the best lower-impact bras I’ve tested — providing an ideal combination of comfort, support, and style. Yes, it really feels like you’re “wearing nothing.” Yes, it’s worth $48.

I tested the Bend This Scoop and Square Bra based on a few factors — sizing, support and style, as well as the materials and care requirements.

For a simple silhouette that never goes out of style, opt for the Scoop and Square Bra (my tried-and-tested favorite). You can wear the square neckline at the front or turn the bra around for a scoop neck. Shoppers love the uncomplicated design and the way it looks nearly invisible beneath tee shirts.

For a slightly deeper cut, opt for the Scoop and Cross Bra. It shows a touch more skin but still offers enough coverage to stretch and play without a slip. This bra can be worn front-facing as a scoop neck or flipped around to wear the crossed straps in the front.

For something with a more athletic flair, go with the V and Racer Bra. Free up your shoulders and wear it as a v-neck with a racerback or turn it around to transform it into a front racer. Add some dimension and wear it atop the Scoop and Square bra for a statement.

Stay cool with the One-Shoulder bra that can be worn on either side. A wide shoulder strap keeps the silhouette centered and supported. The flattering cut elongates the neck for an on-trend style that can easily be layered, dressed up, or down.
