They’re stripping the shame away.
Women plagued with body insecurities tend to fear the camera lens on them — let alone while completely nude.
But a skillful NSFW photographer says shutter-bugging in the buff has helped her previously modest clients build up their self-esteem.
“Nudity channels your inner rebel and allows people to become comfortable with their vulnerability,” pro snapper Catherine Théorêt, who’s captured clothes-free frames of folks of all shapes, sizes, ages and colors since 2017, told Jam Press. “They are able to see strength in it.”
The 35-year-old camerawoman leads her team of glam and atmosphere staffers at the Nuovo Photography studio based in Montreal, Canada, where people are invited to celebrate their bare bodies through avant-garde artistry. Online, the photography imprint has amassed over 155,000 Instagram followers who appreciate Théorêt’s unique push for body positivity.
“Society has often labeled female nudity as explicit or objectifying, creating apprehension among women who fear feeling uncomfortable or degraded,” she said. “However, right from our initial conversation, we emphasize that this experience and the resulting images are entirely for you to decide whether to share or keep private.”
“They are a personal journey,” Théorêt added, “encouraging you to reclaim your power and celebrate your body’s strength and beauty.”
And her patrons’ partners — those lucky enough to get a peek at the prints — benefit from the tongue-in-cheek shoots, too.
“The experience of self-reconnection offers a new lease on life, enabling guests to take risks and embrace new experiences in their love [lives] that they may not have considered before,” said the photographer. “This radiates into more fulfilling romantic relationships.”
“Given the nature of our photography, the partners of our guests are often eager to see the final result, and upon viewing the final photos… needless to say, jaws drop,” bragged Théorêt. “Often, our guests will enjoy the intimacy of our leather-bound albums, while others keep it spicy by decorating their walls with bold prints.”
Some are so proud of their saucy shots that they opt to share them with the world.
“We’ve even seen one guest have the confidence to display her favorite Nuovo photo on a billboard in Times Square,” said Théorêt. “As RuPaul famously says, ‘If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?.’”
For novice models who are apprehensive about standing for snapshots in their birthday suits, Théorêt and her crew work to ensure that each customer is at ease.
“Our staff is trained to ensure that each individual feels comfortable, valued, and respected,” she assured, noting that she’s equipped with an artful arsenal of tricks for getting choice clicks.
“We firmly believe that beauty transcends size, and so we have tailored poses, lighting techniques, and coverage options that complement all body types,” said Théorêt.
“The resulting photographs are more than just images — they represent a journey of self-discovery and self-love.”
And her good eye isn’t just for women grappling with their changing physiques — it’s for aging stunners, too.
“One remarkable woman, Blanca, who is 74 years old, came to us after the loss of her husband, seeking a beautiful way to start a new chapter of her life focused on self-care and self-discovery,” recalled Théorêt of the widowed silver fox, a native of Cuba now living in Miami.
“[Blanca] marvels at the positive changes over time regarding the perception of nudity,” said the picture wiz. “She celebrates how women have found safe avenues to love and embrace their bodies, as she experienced during her time with us.”
“Reflecting on her late husband’s career as a cosmetic surgeon,” Théorêt continued, “she empathizes with women who seek physical perfection for the sake of others rather than for themselves.”
Théorêt views the vixen as an inspiration.
“Blanca’s experience serves as a powerful reminder that confidence and gratitude transcend physical appearance,” she said. “Embracing one’s body at any age can lead to liberation and a renewed perspective.”
However, taking still nudes hasn’t worked out in everyone’s favor.
In August 2022, a Florida A&M student sparked social media outrage when she dropped trou on the campus grounds. A year prior, a Ukrainian model was detained in Dubai for rocking nothing but a smile during an X-rated photoshoot.
But Théorêt says rather than walking away with a rap sheet, her clients leave their photoshoots with an everlasting confidence boost.
“We offer lifelong reminders of how beautiful people truly are, driven by our belief that everyone deserves to feel confident in their own skin,” said Théorêt.
“Life is unpredictable – in our seven years of operation, we have now reached a point where nothing surprises us anymore,” she said. “This holds true not only for guests but also for our photographers, we are prepared for anything.”
