NextImg:I proposed to my girlfriend at our graduation — haters are calling me selfish

B.S.?

A recent UK college graduate is dividing the internet with his public proposal, asking his girlfriend for her hand in marriage at their commencement ceremony.

In the clip, posted Tuesday to Newcastle University’s Twitter page, the unidentified man — also wearing a cap and gown — pops the question as the woman walks across the stage to accept her diploma.

She looks shocked, taking a couple of steps back while the audience begins to clap and cheer. Although there’s no way to hear what the two are saying, she appears to accept his proposal.

He slips the ring onto her finger, and they hug before embracing a university staff member standing nearby.

The Post reached out to Newcastle for comment.

Although a marriage proposal is usually met with celebration, many Twitter users were critical of the man’s decision to do it in such a public place — and during another milestone event in his now-fiancée’s life.

“Let her have her moment,” one user critiqued. “This is awful.”

“Do you know what the worst thing about this is? All of it,” another naysayer commented.

“It’s awful,” agreed another. “Poor lady. One of the best days of her life hijacked by a rather selfish prat.”

But some thought the gesture was romantic.

“What a really special day to remember for them,” one Twitter user gushed. “Congratulations to her great achievement and success, and congratulations and best wishes to the beautiful couple!”

Public proposals are a source of contention, sparking debates if they’re cute or cringeworthy.

In January, a newly betrothed woman took to TikTok to share the “nasty” comments she received when an unauthorized clip of her partner proposing in Central Park with a flash mob went viral.

“The younger generation has started to become the older generation on social media with no regard for other people’s feelings,” Linn Ekebom, 29, vented in the clip.

And in December, a man was taken to task for proposing at his girlfriend’s graduation from La Trobe University in Australia.

Posting to her Facebook account, feminist commentator Clementine Ford did not see it as a joyous moment.

“I’m going to make it so that she remembers the day she graduated was the day I proposed to her. That was the most important thing that happened to her that day,” Ford wrote.

“And everyone who came to support her will be congratulating her on that (and not her graduation). Stop stealing women’s moments from them. They do not belong to you. They are not yours to have.”
