NextImg:I forced my teen daughter to gut a fish to learn a ‘life skill’ — now my family is angry

A father forced his grossed-out young daughter to gut a fish he bought at the store to teach her a “life skill” — and he’s now asking strangers on the internet if it was wrong to do so after his wife grew angry at him.

The 38-year-old dad of two girls, 13 and 10, posted in the popular Reddit group “Am I the A–hole” to ask that exact question after teaching his older daughter to debone and descale a fish against her will.

Fair_Moose_4755 explained that he and his wife have been teaching their girls a variety of “life skills such as cooking, cleaning and car maintenance” and recently the family went on a camping trip.

His oldest daughter learned to make the fire, pitch the tent and go fishing, he wrote.

However, the pair had no luck on the water and didn’t catch a single fish. So, to “get the feel for it”, the dad said he went to a store and bought a whole fish.

He took it home in order to teach her how to process a fish, he said.

The husband and father told others that if his daughter wants to eat fish, she needs to learn to gut them herself.

“We live on the ocean — this is a life skill, it’s common to buy fish whole,” the father wrote in the Reddit post. “If she want to eat fish she needs to know how to gut them.”

He said he thought it was an important thing to learn and understand.

“It’s a fish and she was grossed out, but I made her do it and then we cooked it,” he wrote.

Gutting a fish is a needed skill the father argued.

The young teen then told her mother what he made her do.

“She went to my wife telling her I forced her to gut a fish,” the dad wrote. “This resulting in an argument about forcing the kids to do stuff but it’s a life skill and we forced them to learn how to cook and do laundry so I don’t see the difference.”

Redditors commenting on the post overwhelmingly agreed that the dad was indeed the a–hole in the situation.

“YTA [you are the a–hole],” one person wrote in the top-voted comment. “I can cook, I can clean, I can do laundry, I can do many things. But not once in my more than 60 years on this earth have I needed to gut a fish. Unless you regularly catch your own fish, it is not an essential life skill.

“By all means, if she wants to know how to gut a fish, teach her. But forcing her makes you TA [the a–hole],” the user added.

Another commenter pointed out how the father had to go out and buy a fish for the so-called “life experience” — a detail many people laughed at.

“You couldn’t even catch a fish for the life experience, you had to buy one,” the user wrote. “Why didn’t you suck it up and stay out all day to feed your family? Oh that’s right, it’s not actually a life skill these day.”

Yet another pointed out the absurdity of the task.

“You don’t see the difference between gutting a fish and cooking/laundry? YTA.”
