A festival goer claimed that he dived into a sewer to save his iPhone 12 Max after the Apple device fell out of his pocket while he was going to the bathroom.
Augusto Figueiredo, 30, told Jam Press that he was attending a hip-hop festival in Barra da Tijucaon, Brazil on Friday — and watched in horror as his phone slipped out of his pants and plunged into the contaminated water.
According to Figueiredo, he attempted to pay other concert-goers $400 to retrieve the phone but no one accepted.
“I just wanted to get my mobile phone back,” said Figueiredo. “I offered money to other people but then ended up jumping in anyway.”
The concert-goer managed to find the $1,100 phone — which amazingly still worked — but his troubles didn’t end there.
“There were a lot of people there at the time, some were filming, but I never imagined it would have all these repercussions,” said the 30-year-old.
Figueiredo, who had suffered an injury in the ditch, was later rushed to the hospital after falling ill.
He was placed on a four-hour observation period and was given a tetanus shot as well as stitches for his foot.
The man said that his family has no idea of the incident and that he realized he didn’t fully think through his actions until it was too late.
“It was crazy! Only afterward did I start to think about the dangers,” said Figueiredo. “It wouldn’t have been worth it if I didn’t find my phone, but luckily I did.”
Figueiredo is one of the lucky few people who have managed to escape with both their life and electronic gadget.
In December 2022, a New York City man was struck and killed by a northbound F train at the Jackson Heights – Roosevelt Avenue station in Queens while retrieving his phone.
According to police, the 46-year-old victim had dropped his phone on the train’s roadbed around 11:30 p.m. and failed to climb back up in time.
Police have yet to announce the name of the victim.
