A woman saved her husband’s life by donating a kidney to him — after they were found to be a one in 22 million match.

Donna Creed, 49, of Leicester, England, donated the organ to her gravely ill partner, Darren, 51, last month — and it has already transformed their lives after he became so sick that he was barely able to hold a conversation.

“I can’t put into words how thankful I am; it is the best gift she could ever give me,” Darren told South West News Service. “She’s given me the gift of life.”

“To hear the odds were 22 million to one was just staggering — there’s more chance of us winning the lottery.”

Twelve years ago, Darren was first diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease, which is a genetic disorder that produces cysts in a kidney, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases.

He was put on a medication that slowed down the progression of the disease for about three to four years, the 51-year-old explained.

However, last year, things took a turn for the worst and his kidney function fell to just 19 percent, which made him extremely exhausted.

Darren was facing long-term dialysis until doctors could find a match for a kidney donor.

“I wasn’t too hopeful as the odds were so long,” he told the outlet. “We went away and asked family and friends and lots of people volunteered to be tested.

“But the first person who was tested was Donna and, incredibly, it was first time lucky as she turned out to be a match.”

His wife even said that it was the “greatest gift” she ever could have given him and that they were all shocked by the results.

“We genuinely didn’t think I was going to be a match because the chances are so slim but every test we had came back looking like it was matching,” said Donna, who works as a hotel manager.

The couple, who have been married for 33 years, scheduled the procedure to be done in June, but just one day before, Darren’s blood pressure spiked and he was forced to have dialysis treatment.

But in July, he was given the go-ahead and underwent the transfer.

“Darren woke up from the transplant a new person,” his wife gushed.

“I’m still recovering but I can already feel the difference,” Darren said. “Before we couldn’t socialize as much as I was always so tired. I had to watch what I ate.”

And not only has it transformed the 51-year-old’s life, but it’s also changed their family.

“He was so well. It was like getting my husband back from 25 years ago,” Donna said. “He was laughing and joking where he had been so tired before.”

She also urged others to consider organ donation, as you never know for whom you’ll be a match.

“It is great to be able to do this for your husband, a member of your family or even a total stranger,” she explained.

“It’s such a gift to give for just a week of discomfort.”
