Only Murders in the Building has always been a show that sets up rails only to plow directly off of them, but Season 4 is proving to be the most unhinged season of the bunch.

That statement is evidenced by Episode 7, “Valley of the Dolls,” in which an all-out brawl between Loretta Durkin (Meryl Streep) and Doreen (Melissa McCarthy) ensues. What are they fighting over? Why, only America’s most eligible bachelor: Oliver Putnam (Martin Short).

After receiving a startling breakup text from Oliver and flying from Los Angeles to New York, Loretta arrives at Doreen’s door in Long Island where the main trio is hiding out. Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver left in a hurry at the end of Episode 6 after discovering that the murderer placed cameras in their respective apartments at the Arconia and had been watching them, possibly as far back as when the first murder in the building occurred.

Desperate for a place to go, the podcast hosts decided to make the trek out to visit Charles’ sister Doreen, played by the Gilmore Girls and Bridesmaids alum, as that is one place the killer would never think to look for him — safe to say their relationship is a little torrid.

The trio arrives at Doreen’s doll-infested home — after ringing the doorbell which chimes to “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” by Billy Joel, of course — and begin to shelter in place until they can get to the bottom of the case. One by one, however, characters begin to turn up at the supposed “safe house” and add to the unfolding chaos. Included in the bunch are the acting trio of fake Mabel (Eva Longoria), fake Oliver (Zach Galifianakis) and fake Charles (Eugene Levy), as well as Paramount exec Bev Melon (Molly Shannon).

Loretta, unaware that Oliver had proposed mere hours earlier to her stand-in over the phone, rushed out to Los Angeles after receiving a sudden text from him breaking things off. In a classic case of comical misunderstandings, someone on set of Loretta’s TV show had handed her phone to her gauze-wrapped body double instead of her, which is when Oliver popped the question. After walking in on Oliver and Doreen in a compromising situation — nothing was really happening but it looks like it was — the pair have a face-to-face conversation and reconcile sweetly. Not before Loretta asks Oliver about what is going on with Doreen, though.

“Is she someone I should be worried about?,” Loretta asks Oliver as he responds, “Everyone should be worried about Doreen.”

Call it foreshadowing as mere moments later — after Loretta discovers the true extent of how crazy Oliver has become with her on the other side of the country — Doreen picks a fight over Oliver. It all starts off pretty modestly but quickly escalates with Doreen calling Loretta a “Beverly Hills rich bitch” and “Hollywood hussy,” ultimately pushing her backward over a couch.

I don’t mean to exaggerate but this is where true television is made.

McCarthy’s character then forces Loretta to chew on her braids as Streep resorts to faking a pacemaker issue to get out of a headlock. After regretfully backing up and apologizing, Loretta admits to acting and kicks Doreen in the face and then holding her down and whipping her with her own braids.

To make matters worse (or better for the viewers at home), Eva Longoria then jumps in and gives Doreen advice on how to put up a better fight. “Hey Doreen, you gotta bridge. You’re going to have to get your hand in for a chokehold,” she tells McCarthy’s character. “Bridge, c’mon, kill.”

Any outlandish scene would not be complete without an Oliver one-liner, though. Rushing downstairs to break up the fight, Oliver tells the two women that this ordeal is not necessary in the most Oliver Putnam way possible. “Woah, woah, easy ladies, there’s no need to fight over me like Loni Anderson and Charo,” he says as Doreen goes in to bite Loretta.

Melissa McCarthy and Meryl Streep in 'Only Murders in the Building' season 4

I’ve previously remarked that this is the best season of Only Murders in the Building (by far) and it appears that it only gets better as the episodes go along. If a fight between two national treasures happens in Episode 7, what can we even begin to predict for the finale?

The first seven episodes of Only Murders in the Building Season 4 are currently streaming on Hulu, and Seasons 1-3 are available to watch on Hulu and Disney+.
