NextImg:Hurricane Beatriz forms off Mexico’s coast as strong winds, heavy rains rapidly intensify

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is now tracking two tropical cyclones in the Eastern Pacific during what is expected to be an active period for the basin.

Hurricane Warnings are now posted for parts of the western Mexico coastline as Hurricane Beatriz rapidly strengthened Friday.

Hurricane Beatriz is located about 175 miles away from Manzanillo, Mexico.

Maximum sustained winds are now up to 75 mph with higher gusts, but strengthening was expected.

Hurricane Beatriz is moving northwestward and is expected to track parallel to and very close to the southwestern coast of Mexico through Saturday.

Unlike Hurricane Adrian, which moved westward away from Mexico and Central America, Beatriz is expected to travel much closer to the coastline of southwestern Mexico.

As a result, a Hurricane Warning has been issued for areas in Mexico from Zihuatanejo to Cabo Corrientes while a Hurricane Watch has been issued north of Cabo Corrientes to Punta Mita.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect south of Zihuatanejo in Mexico to Acapulco, and from north of Cabo Corrientes to Punta Mita. A Tropical Storm Watch now extends from north of Punta Mita to San Blas. The government of Mexico has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Las Islas Marias.

A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions are expected within 36 hours. A Hurricane Watch means hurricane-force winds (74-plus mph) are possible within the watch area. A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds (39 to 73 mph), conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous.

A Tropical Storm Warning means tropical-storm-force winds are expected somewhere in the warning area within 36 hours. A Tropical Storm Watch means tropical storm conditions are expected within 48 hours.

Hurricane-force winds are expected within the warning area later Friday into Friday night, and in the Hurricane Watch areas farther north on Saturday.

In addition to ferocious winds expected with Beatriz, flooding is expected along the coast for storm surge and inland from up to 8 inches of rain that could fall in some places.

Rough seas and rip currents are also forecast along the western coast of Mexico as Beatriz moves through.
